TechCrunch: Yahoo and Netflix join Google to offer Google-branded email subscriptions

Share Share Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. are teaming up to offer paid email subscriptions on Google Inc.’s Gmail service.
The news comes a week after the companies agreed to an agreement to combine Yahoo Mail and Google Apps to make a single Google-powered email service.
Google will provide the Gmail email service, which will include Google Apps for iOS and Android, in a separate Google account, with the option of using the Gmail account to make purchases, Google said in a blog post.
Yahoo will offer the Gmail and Google Play accounts as a standalone account.
The deal is part of Google’s efforts to become a major player in the email space, where the company has a significant presence, with Gmail and Gmail accounts accounting for more than half of all email subscribers worldwide.
The email service’s revenue grew by nearly 50 percent in the third quarter to $14.3 billion.
